Thought to be the oldest surviving Tasmanian State guernsey, its actual provenance is a riddle. Passed down through the famous Tasmanian footballing family; the Leitch's, it is most likely to have been from 1914 when William Leitch was manager of the State team or possibly from the 1920's when his son Allan was in the team. William, whose name adorns the TFL's best and fairest medal, is recognised as Tasmanian football's grand old man, having been a highly regarded player, a patron of the game in Tasmania and a long-time delegate to the Australian National Football Council. The image and wording have been lifted, (with permission from the Tasmanian Football History Group), from 'The Footy Jumper Book', produced and published by Sporting Nation

In the '70's & '80's the uniformity of footy jumpers was a defining feature of the game. Back then the jumper that was a proud symbol of your club was identical to a club just down the road in another league.

Jumpers were either hooped, yoked, striped or sashed mainly. Those clubs with a bespoke monogrammed jumper stood metaphorically slightly above the rest. The jumpers featured here from left to right are: Ocean Grove, Greensborough, Wynyard, Ovens and Murray FL Rep, Darley, Murray FL rep, North West FL rep, Wimmera FL rep, Hampden FL rep, Peninsula FL rep, North West Tasmania FA rep, Irymple, Boort, Goulburn Valley FL rep, Golden Rivers FL rep, Culcairn, Sandhurst, Navarre, Donald, Katandra.

Unlike 'club' jumpers, these were all made for 'rep' teams; national, state and league. As a recognition of each player's individual excellence at a moment in time, donning these jumpers with their specially chosen brethren was invariably a proud moment & hence 30 - 40 years later many are still retained by their owners as a symbol of their playing careers.
