Stubbsy’s jumper
I started collecting the odd (woollen) country footy jumper a few years ago. They bring back some great memories of footy in an (already) altogether different era. This one certainly does. It’s a mate’s Wesley Hill Junior Football Club jumper. It was last worn in the heat of battle in the 1982 Castlemaine & District Junior Football League Under 15 Grand Final against arch rival West End.
His team won. My team lost. In 2013 progress arrived and overnight both clubs ceased to exist. Without knowing the ins and outs of the decision to disband them (and a four-decade old competition), it’s hard to throw too many stones. But it’s easy to be a little sad. In 1982 I didn’t get to keep my blue and white hooped West End jumper, (a la Geelong).
I’m glad Stubbsy got to keep his.
